Mr Green was originally launched as a Swedish-only site but
has quickly spread to cover a large market that includes Europe
and Canada. Though the site launched less than a decade ago,
it’s made a name for itself by providing a large library of
casino games created by a variety of the Web’s best casino game
designers. This year has been big at Mr Green, opening to
Canadian customers for the first time, taking home a few IGA
awards, and releasing a series of TV commercials in their
existing markets.
Let’s start with some positive features of the services the site provides.
Licensure by the Malta Gaming Authority.
While Malta is not one of the top-tier licensing bodies (like
the UK or Gibraltar), the country’s gaming authority does
require certain standards of performance–including regular
reviews and mandatory compliance. The Gaming Authority operates
a website to handle player complaints directly, a nice feature
that’s too-often completely missing from licensing
jurisdictions. Overall, while licensure from Malta isn’t the
most rigorous in the world, it lends more credibility than one
of the “rubber stamp” jurisdictions like Costa Rica, Panama, and
Belize.
Mr Green has a large and varied casino game library.
Within a few minutes of loading the casino, I saw popular games
by Betsoft, NetEnt, IGT, and a few others. I like blended game
libraries, and Mr Green’s does a good job of representing the
best these firms have to offer. If you’re into online slots,
you’re in luck here – Mr Green has among the largest online slot
collections I’ve ever seen. I go into much more detail on each
game category below.
The site is well-designed and attractive.
This isn’t meant as praise for purely aesthetic reasons. Yes,
it’s nice to have a pretty site to look at, and the fact that I
didn’t experience lag or any other streaming problems during the
couple of days that I spent reviewing the site. But that’s not
the only reason I place this in the “pro” column. To me, a site
that spends time considering things like design is one that
cares about its user’s experience. I’m always nervous when
reviewing or playing at an ugly site, because it seems to me
that they don’t care that much about the end-user.
That’ not the case at Mr Green.
For some bettors, these may
be reasons to re-consider opening an account:
No Americans allowed. I live in the United
States, so I’m keenly aware of when a gambling site isn’t
friendly to American players. This isn’t a big deal if you don’t
live in the US, but for Americans without easy access to many of
the world’s biggest online gambling brands, it’s a big deal.
Mr Green runs a limited number of dull promotions.
I already talked about how the site isn’t forthcoming about
wagering requirements – that would be bad enough to put me off
the site – especially if I cared about bonuses and promos. But
besides that decidedly non-customer friendly policy, the site
runs few promotions, and the ones they do run aren’t interesting
at all. The terms aren’t particularly good – requiring new
customers to deposit four times to earn their full welcome bonus
is bizarre. Mr Green has a disappointing selection of
difficult-to-obtain bonuses.
The site is too secretive for my taste.
Between the hidden wagering requirements and the unknown fee
structure for certain deposit and withdrawal methods, it seems
like Mr Green is hiding details about their services on purpose.
I can’t confirm that, but I can confirm that it’s difficult to
find certain details about their operation. I don’t like
depositing money to an account on a site that isn’t forthcoming,
and I get the feeling that Mr Green is not forthcoming.
For an up-to-date list of available bonuses and other
promotions, check Mr
Green’s promotions page.
Here are details on the welcome bonus and the one promotion
running at the time of my review:
New depositors are
eligible for the site’s “$350 Welcome Bonus,” which is actually
four bonuses spread across four deposits. The entire package is
worth $350 and 245 free slot spins. Here’s how it works – on
each of your first four deposits of at least $20, you earn a
bonus with a different match rate and in one case a different
maximum bonus amount.
The twenty free slot spins (only valid on two specific slots
at my last visit) are credited to your account by 5 pm GMT on
the day after you activate the bonus.
Now for some bad news about this Mr Green bonus – I can’t
tell you what the wagering requirements are. I looked all over.
I found conflicting information in other reviews.
I eventually found this clause in the site’s Terms &
Conditions that explains why I couldn’t find anything: “The
wagering requirements, which can vary, will be displayed when
receiving the bonus.” The information wasn’t available because I
wasn’t a prospective bonus-chaser. You have to sign up for an
account and trigger an actual promotion from Mr Green before you
see the wagering requirement for that bonus.
That’s an ugly policy.
I’m always hesitant to
write about VIP programs in the “Bonuses” section of reviews,
but in the case of Mr Green, I’m writing about it because it
seems to be a cornerstone of their entire promotional program.
Players at this site don’t have much in the way of choice when
it comes to promotions, besides a few scattered short-term and
game-specific promos each month.
Mr Green describes their VIP program without any irony as “A
home away from home; for players looking for a new level of
one-to-one service and a touch of ‘je ne sais quoi’. A club for
true Ladies and Gentlemen!”
I’m not sure if that’s accurate – I’m not a member.
The site’s requirements for becoming a VIP member – …players
must typically wager a minimum of €80,000 or have
deposited at least €7,000 over at a two-month period. Mr Green
encourages potential VIP members (or players who are already VIP
members at another site) to contact them via the following email
address: vip@mrgreen.com.
Why would you want to join?
VIP members are eligible for cash-back deals not offered to
regular members, a promised slew of promotions aimed at big
spenders, access to a dedicated account manager, faster
withdrawals, and other goodies.
As for withdrawals, Mr Green allows one free withdrawal per
customer every seven days. Beyond that, a fee is imposed
per-withdrawal. It varies from one currency to another, with
fees maxing out between $10 and $200.
I’d like to give more details, but besides a few cursory
mentions of transfer times, the site doesn’t give the usual
details on minimums, maximums, fees, and other features. I had
to dig around at a few trusted review sites to get these
details. It appears that most deposit and withdrawal methods are
listed by the site’s customer service as requiring a matter of
hours or between one and three business days to transfer, but
that convenience comes at a cost. Mr Green charges you if you
make more than four withdrawals per month, and they charge you
fees for using certain withdrawal methods, particularly credit
cards and bank transfers.
Here is an overview of each of the gambling options available
at Mr Green:
It’s appropriate that the site lists that category first –
it’s the largest and the most impressive. I counted 358
different slot games in all, from Betsoft, NetEnt, IGT, and a
few other minor designers. The collection includes licensed
titles (Cluedo, South Park, Transformers), progressive jackpot
games (Mega Fortune, Hall of Gods, Arabian Nights), and many
more. Fans of online slots don’t often have access to this much
variety, and it’s worth mentioning that the emphasis on slots in
its library means Mr Green is gunning for business from online
slot fans.
Fourteen variants of roulette are available at Mr Green.
Here’s the complete list, along with a short description of each
game:
If you like live roulette, you’re in luck. If you were
looking for interesting variations on a casino classic, you’re
out of luck. I had fun playing Three Wheel and the bonus spin
games, but that doesn’t justify a collection of fourteen titles.
Of the nine variants of blackjack available, six were either
live or “enhanced” versions of existing titles. I hate when
sites try to fluff up the size of their non-slot library with
“VIP” and “Gold” editions of classic table games. Little
variation exists between these games – it’s mostly a design
issue.
Here’s a full list of blackjack games hosted by Mr Green
Casino:
The only variant that interests me, besides the standard game
of blackjack, is Double Xposure, in which both the dealer’s
cards are dealt face-up, and the dealer stops on all totals of
17.
Few of the above blackjack variants are available in Free
Play mode. That’s because many of them are either live games or
exist on other software or site platforms and are therefore
inaccessible. That’s annoying. I like to try as many games as
possible before I open an account.
The “live games” section of Mr Green contains five live
dealer versions of classic casino games as well as access to
NetEnt’s popular live casino platform.
Here’s the full list of titles:
Certain games listed above are only available between the
hours of noon and 6 AM GMT, so check the site for specific
listings.
This section collects both casino-style poker games (table
versions of classic poker variants) and video poker titles.
Here’s the full list of titles:
Of that list, the first ten are video poker variants, with
most of the basic versions covered and a couple of interesting
variants (Texas Hold ’em and Triple Play Draw). The bottom three
games are versions of casino-style poker. This collection is
heavy on video poker variants that aren’t worth a darn (do we
really need three versions of Bonus Poker?) and not heavy enough
on casino-style poker. A selection of three casino poker titles
is weak, especially for a site with such a massive game library.
This is the category used to collect games that don’t fit
under any other heading. Here’s the full list of titles:
It’s disappointing to see just two baccarat games and one
version of keno. Games like Red Dog, Odd One In, and Six Shooter
are long-odds affairs that probably appeal to few gamblers.
You can telephone Mr Green’s customer service staff at +44 20
71979541. This is not a toll-free number, so all local and
international charges apply. That’s annoying, especially
considering how common toll-free contact methods are.
All customer service emails should be sent to
customerservice-international@mrgreen.com.
I couldn’t tell from the site if Mr Green’s Live Chat is
available 24 hours a day or on a more limited schedule.
Mr Green is really a slot casino – yes, it has a large
library produced by a number of the biggest designers in the
industry, but the majority of the games in that library are
slots of some kind. If you don’t like slots, or if you’re the
type of online gambler who is interested in welcome bonuses and
other promotions, you’ll be disappointed.
I’m just disappointed by the site’s collection of casino games.
I heartily recommend Mr Green if you live in Europe
or Canada, enjoy online slots, and aren’t interested in bonus
programs. If, on the other hand, you’re a big bonus-chaser, or
you’re looking for a site with a large library of non-slot
games, you might want to keep looking. The welcome bonus and the
game library at Mr Green heavily favor slot games and the people
who play them.
I asked the same question early on in my review process – mostly
because my poor editing software was driving me nuts. The answer
is simple – Mr Green Casino removed the “.” to differentiate it
from an existing European company called “Mr. Green”.
I can tell you a bit
about the weekly offers currently available. The first is aimed
at slot fans – you can earn 120 free spins by making a
qualifying deposit of $20 or more if you make that deposit and
request the bonus during a stretch of three days this week.
Wagering requirements apply, but (once again) the site doesn’t
spell those requirements out at all.
Believe it or not, it can
be hard to find a valid street address for some online casinos.
I managed to find a physical address for Mr Green, and I’m
copying it here for convenience:
Mr Green LTD Tagliaferro Business Centre, Level 7 High
Street, Sliema SLM 1549 Malta
Rather than describe all the rules for the nearly 500 titles at
the site, look for the site’s Game Rules section of the T&C page
