The Ryder Cup is my favourite golf tournament, but sadly it’s only played once every two years. The tournament has been played since 1927 and is the only tournament where golfers need to rely on teammates. In the Ryder Cup the best golfers from Europe and the best golfers from the United States battle it out against each other in a 3-day tournament that is different from your typical golf tournament. The 2012 Ryder Cup is being held 28th – 30th September at the Medinah Country Club in Illinois and the Americans are slight favorites to win it this year. |

A total of 12 golfers from the USA and Europe make up each team. Players can either qualify for a spot on the team through a few different methods or they can make the team by being selected by the team captain. The 24 golfers play a total of 28 matches over the course of the weekend and the team with the most points wins the Ryder Cup trophy.
The 28 games that are played during the Ryder Cup include 8 foursome matches, 8 fourball matches and 12 singles matches. You don’t get to watch this type of golf very often, which is one of the reasons why the Ryder Cup is one of the most popular golf events in the world. Throughout history the United States has had the upper hand in the Ryder Cup, but over the past few years the European team has a 6-2 record.
Ryder Cup Bets
· Obviously the most common bet during the Ryder Cup is picking whether you think the American team or European team will win the trophy. You can bet on this leading up to the tournament and up until the 3rd round with most sportbooks.
· You can bet on the team you think will score the most points on a single day of play. Since there is 3 days in this event you’ll be able to make this wager 3 times if you’d like.
· The Ryder Cup offers the chance to bet on point spreads in golf, which isn’t very often. An example would be taking the European team to win by –2.5 points, which if you don’t know how to read odds simply means that the Europeans would need to beat the Americans by 3 or more points or else the Americans would win the bet.
· You can bet on all 28 of the match-ups separately as well during the Ryder Cup. If you want to make even more money then you can add a couple of the 28 game bets onto a parlay, which is a single bet with 2-12 games.
